What type of glass is best for whisky?

Whisky drinkers know there is nothing quite like sipping a good malt from a quality glass. But what type of glass is best for enjoying whisky? That can be a tricky question for even the most experienced whisky enthusiast.

One of the most popular types of glasses for whisky is the tulip glass. This kind of glass is designed to allow the spirit to "open up" and release its aromas, allowing you to appreciate the full flavour of your favourite whisky. This type of glass also has a slight inward curve near its lip, which helps to contain the aroma while you are nosing it.

The Glencairn glass is another popular choice for whisky drinkers, and is increasingly being used in bars and pubs throughout the world. The design was developed by Raymond Davidson in part with Master Blenders at The Glenmorangie Company and bears a strong resemblance to traditional tasting nosing glasses used by experts in Scotland. The Glencairn's wide rim allows whisky enthusiasts to better appreciate their drink's aromas, while its tapered top captures those same aromas for an enhanced nose.

The rocks or Old-Fashioned glass is another classic option for enjoying whisky neat or with a few drops of water. The thicker walls and heavier base makes it ideal for "on the rocks" drinks, as it helps keep the ice from melting too quickly, as well as making it easy to grab from your bar when entertaining friends. Its simple shape also offers ample room for stirring or muddling ingredients when making cocktails such as an Old-Fashioned or Whisky Sour.
